Driving Instructor

Have you ever considered becoming a driving instructor? You can enjoy the freedom and benefits of being your own boss. You can make your own choices and feel the satisfaction of helping pupil's develop skills that they can use for life.

There are two different training options available:

  • Choose to be independent (on your own)
  • Join a franchise in your area

Driving Instructor Training Process

Becoming a fully qualified driving instructor isn't an easy process. However, as long as you find the right trainer and are prepared to work hard, you will have great chance of passing.

There are 3 exams required to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor. The whole process of passing the 3 exams must be done within 2 years of passing the 1st exam. Trainees are only allowed 3 attempts at the 2nd and 3rd exams. The three exams are:

  • ADI Part 1 - Theory & Hazard Perception
  • ADI Part 2 - Ability to drive
  • ADI Part 3 - Ability to teach

It's possible to pass all 3 exams in as little as 3 months. Typically trainees take between 6 to 12 months if they carry out training around their existing job.

Requirements of becoming a driving instructor

There are a some minimum requirements to become a driving instructor. All applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Hold a current UK manual licence for at least 3 years. By the time you qualify you should have at least 4 years experience before entering the ADI register
  • Not have been disqualified from driving in the last four years before joining the ADI register
  • Have no more than 6 points on your driving licence
  • Be a 'fit and healthy' to enter the ADI register. This is quite vague; if you're unsure, ask when applying
  • Pass a criminal reference check 'DBS'
  • Driving instructors also have to complete a DBS every 4 years to remain on the ADI register
